A THEMATIC EVENT “COOPERATION OF INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTIONS IN PROVIDING SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN CENTRAL ASIA: THE UN-IFAS MODEL” ORGANIZED BY THE TURKMEN SIDE WAS HELD IN THE UN HEADQUARTERS
On the 17th of July 2019, a thematic event named “Cooperation of international institutions in providing sustainable development in Central Asia: the UN-IFAS model” was held in the UN Headquarters. The official representatives of the UN member states, experts of the UN structural agencies situated in New York, listeners of civic organizations and scientific society participated to the event.
The participants exchanged views on the prospects of consolidating the joint efforts in eliminating the impacts of ecological disasters resulting from the climate change, as well as the influence of anthropogenic factors in using the water resources in different regions of the world. Special attention was particularly paid to the essentiality of strengthening collaboration in resolving the problem of the Aral Sea. In this regard, the role of Turkmenistan, as a country that chairs the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea and the significance of the upcoming multilateral consultations on determining the future format of the Special UN Programme (UN SPAS) for the Aral Sea basin were underlined.
It was noted that the above mentioned consultations that were approved by the relevant resolution of the UN General Assembly are to become a practical step on the way to the establishment of multifaceted international mechanism in the resolution of the ecological catastrophe of the Aral region.
During the event, the high ranking representatives of the participating delegations, particularly those of the Central Asian states shared their national experience on the implementation of the programmes aimed at the improvement of the social and economic situation in the Aral region.
The visit of the delegation of Turkmenistan continues. The presentation of the Voluntary National Review of Turkmenistan on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals in the framework of the High-Level Political Forum in the UN Headquarters is planned for the 18th of July 2019.
